I've been using Firefox for atleast 2 years, yet i never really saw much difference to IE. Sure, they have plug-ins and sure it has customizability. But, what the hell is that for when you surf the web? You don't stop and go ''Hey lets click my plug-ins!''. No, ofcourse not. We want FASTER, BETTER. And thats when someone flung Opera to me. I have found no problems with Opera, heck i find it extremely amazing. I liked Opera so much that i even removed Firefox. I think the only reason Firefox is still there, is because of it's huge popularity. Nothing else.

Ofcourse, i might be wrong. But, atleast that is what they always tell me. ''Why do you use Firefox?'' ''I don't know, because it's better than IE'' How do they even know it's better than IE? The difference is hardly notable and most of these people don't even use Plug-ins. Infact, all they do is surf around the web. Firefox's Popup blocker is hardly no different than Opera's. So please, stop making invalid excuses. If you have valid proof that Firefox IS better than Opera. Then please, show me. Because all i see is a baseless arguement amoungst browsers. We all prefer different ones, and we all think ours is the best hence my Opera statement.

Opera has its small quirks but I can safely say that it is the only browser which is smooth even when a hundred tabs are open. Firefox is like a slow cumbersome beast. My order of browser ratings would be :

1.Opera
2.IE (try Avant)
3.FF

Well i have used like everyone in this plante IE, i hate it. I tried FF and Opera, i like a lot Opera but some sites like gmail and its built-in chat and quick contacts dont works well with opera and some animation (im not sure if called macromedia flash player or something similar) just simple dont works at all. But FF runs around 95% of all sites. For me, Opera for some good feels about the look and stability downloading or reading PDF files, some features like mouse gestures, etc. And FF for most of the web sites because FF just do it really good enough. I prefer success over memory usage, you dont?

Deranged, I have actually fell in love with some Opera widgets and the new Speed Dial Feature, though Opera runs perfectly in my Windows installatio. In my Linux installation, I have not been able to get the widgets I like into the positions I want. And I have had troubles getting Flash on Opera for Ubuntu as well. Plus, people say Opera has a built in Content blocker, does it really matter if it doesn't come with a default list of ads to block? I will use Opera in my Windows installation, and stick with Firefox in my Ubuntu installation.

Hi all,

I have been using and trying to get others to use Opera for years because it beats FF and all others by far i think.
But i agree on the open source issue. The fact is, when people just want fast and secure, Opera does a better job.

Firefox has it's ups and downs. I prefer Firefox cause there are certain things in Firefox that Opera doesn't have. Yes, I think Opera is a good browser, it does pass the acid2 test, I have tried it before, and I do wish Mozilla would add a built in ad-blocker (Would really help out), and make the way it manages multiple home pages better (And I admit, IE7 does has a good way of dealing with Multiple Home Pages), but overall, I prefer Firefox.

I have used IE, Firefox and Opera for a few years now. Opera beats Firefox objectively by lengths in day to day use.
If you don't like innovations, you just stick to firefox which is good for old IE-users who seem to stick to old patterns.

Opera is for more for open minded people who are adopting to the quality and performance of a product rather than its shiny well marketed surface...

Some comments about "open-source", the color of the skin or whether the marketing is good are completely irrelevant to the actual free product that Opera is...

Try Opera, adopt it's innovations and features and be stunned by it's efficiency.

Opera (with all the inbuilt features) surely is faster that firefox (with no plugins). Opera is a classic example of how closed source can still be better than open source. I hate the open source vs closed source wars. All that matters is which browser gives better performance and faster results. I am not into Firefox because I dont want to waste my time hunting down ad-ons. Why isnt ad-block there in firefox by default? Its the most basic thing, if its open source why not add essential things in by default? Answer to that is if you try to add all necessary extensions into firefox (like opera has them) then it will suck more memory what it does now.
Simply put firefox without extensions is not a browser at all and opera is off to work from the time it is downloaded.

Hi,

With regard to Firefox being open source, while Opera is closed, I think your statement: "If you don't know C++, then that shouldn't make a difference" is ill-considered.

I'm surprised to be pointing out that open source software benefits non-programmers as well. A vibrant development community is great for everyone, as a glance at the population of available add-ons for Firefox will confirm.

Open source is about opportunity and choice.

Thanks,
C

I am using Opera for the past 8 years, ever since I purchased my first computer. I advocate to all my friends about Opera. The good features like the download manager, Download History, skins etc. are a few that none of the other browsers can come near. Only problem is that Opera takes a bit of extra time to open up. If this is set right, OPERA is and will be alltime KING of BROWSERS.

You should try this test on a GNU/Linux distribution, too. Firefox seems to be optimized for GNU/Linux, while Opera appears to be optimized for Windows.

What you are missing by the thought that "If you don't know C++ then it doesn't matter if it's open source" is that Opera is going to be enhanced and developed at the owners expense and with their goals in mind.

The owner of Opera has to pay someone to design new features, new architecture, write the code, test the code, etc, etc, etc.

FireFox (open source) on the other hand has thousands of developers working on new features and new ways of architecting the product.

YOU may not know C++, but some 12 year old super-genius in his basement does. And he will come up with an awesome feature or a better way of doing things that will end up in Firefox that Opera will never see, or at least not for months or years after.

I don't know how to build a jet engine, but I'd still rather fly across country on a jet than a propeller plane.

PS> I do know C++ which, perhaps, gives me more insight into why open source is important.
