Hi to all. Well nice job with that top PC that you've used as router. I'm thinking of making my P2 433Mhx-Overclocked to 540Mhz-512 PC-133 RAM 8 GB HDD into wireless and non-wireless router and the other surrounding crap like firewall, ad-block, web-site-cache e.t.c.

But i was provoked to write because all of the people are saying that your PC is using too much power, that it makes significant difference in the global warming problem, on the pollution of the earth etc, etc...
Well I'm Working as Power Engineer in Managing and Building Power Plants from Hydro through Gas to Nuclear Power Plants and from my experience I'll say that a single computer is making around 0.0000001 percent of the global warming and the other stuffs, In fact you should be concerned a lot more when using air-conditioners because they eat a lot of power. The PC will use 200-1000 W of power if and only if they have all the power cords inside to be connected and to withdraw the maximum power and amperage from the connectors, so if you're using the PC just as a router than it withdraws like 30-50 watts at full load, and that's not too much to panic about. So I'll ask you not to make comments depending on what the media says because they don't have stories and they're making up stuff.

P.S. Thanks for the info on how to transform old PC into a router Alex.

You like Clark Connect?

Then try http://www.smeserver.org/.

I have been using it for for several years and no problems. Upgrades just work also.

Most of you are missing the point. The machine he used is overkill, but likely just the test bed for the project. There are other options that exist, but this is a project on how to do it this way. Additionally, a stage 3 based Gentoo doesn't require compilation and will run on old machines with minimal setup time.

That sounds about right. I just upgraded my IPCOP box. The 20 gig harddrive was replaced with a compact flash to IDE adapter using a 1 gig compact flash card. I also upped the SDRAM from 256 to 512MB . Its way quieter without the HD... compact flash drives are good stuff.

I'm using a P2 233mhz with 256MB ram, it is monitoring traffic in realtime, and 180~ machines connect trough it to the internet.

Think this is overkill? It's all relative.

Our setup is an IBM xSeries 342 rack-mount server, running Gentoo. It only runs 5 or 6 machines, but I don't like my servers going down. ;-)

Dual P3 1.13GHz
1.5GB RAM
3x 36GB 10,00rpm HDD, running in RAID 5e (hot-swapable)
Dual-redundant PSUs (hot-swapable)
On-board Intel 85xx NIC 100mbit for WAN
Realtek 1Gbit NIC for LAN

With this kind of power (An XP 3200, for example) you should have included instructions for more hard-core routing, such as some of the nifty new features of IPTables, QoS, etc.

But Gentoo is really the only choice for us geeks who need total control and speed... m0n0wall etc. are nice, but just not the same.
