Most site monitoring services cost around $5 a month, and the free ones you get are always low quality. Sometimes they don't offer configuration options, sometimes they are trials, and sometimes they only check every 30 minutes. Pingdom is celebrating the holidays by offering one year's free membership for their service. You can configure users and passwords, use SSL, and have them check your site every minute. You can get SMS notification or email, and check up to five sites. Even their API is free, and has scores of uses. You can add up to five contacts to pingdom, and send alerts to different people depending on what site is down. This is by far the best free service as of now. You have 12 hours left to register, and it doesn't require any credit card verification. All you need is a valid email address.
