Alex Tew’s Pixelotto Is Almost A Complete Failure
December 23rd, 2006 - By: Alex BaileyLighting can't strike twice I guess, because Alex Tew's second chance at a million dollars is almost a complete failure. 20 days ago, I reported that he'd be trying his luck again, with a slightly different approach. He was going to charge $2 a pixel, and have a lottery for the extra one million earned. Surprisingly enough the idea didn't work. For the last 2 weeks or so, he's been stuck at the same amount of money earned ($143,000) . Some advertises are even starting to remove their ads from Alex's website out of disappointment.

In the last 7 days of pixelotto's existence, three of them went without selling any pixels what so ever. In fact, if calculated properly it would take almost 5 years at the going rate to fill all one million pixels.

With all the publicity this first got on sites like TechCrunch, I'm honestly surprised it didn't take off. Granted his idea was far from original. In, fact after his first site many ideas similar to his second started popping up all over.
All facts were gathered from PixelLottoReport, not pulled out of my ass.

When Alex Tew had started his Pixelotto lottery on 4th of December I didn’t know it yet :)
Only the 6th of December I’ve read it in one interesting russian marketing blog Marketing in a little town
After it I’ve got a idea to create some website that show how ads sells there and provide daily statistics.
But the big activity starts when there were noticed ads disapearing! And it was multiplied with anger of disapointed advertisers that have made such a hasty investment.
How I get data for it? :) Like every pixelotto visitor - browsing website!

Its definitely not a complete failure…he made 143k in about a month which would make a lot of people very happy. 143k is still a lot of money for not doing a whole lot.

Alex has taken about 300,000 USD in a few weeks, and they call that a failure! He gross profit is about 140K and subtract some small costs, he has earned about 30K a week, 3K a day! I would be happy with an income of 3,000 USD a day, that is 125 dollars, after costs, an hour 24/7.
I agree this is not billions, but Alex is just 22 years old and only a year ago he was planning a career in TESCO.

Financially - it’s done pretty well. As an internet site, not really. $143,000 isn’t too great considering it’s an Internet enterprise compared to the likes of eBay and Yahoo! Look how empty the site is…

Isn’t too great? Big words for someone who probably couldn’t even achieve such a feat in the same amount of time as he has. If you think you know better, why not show your own stuff?

I agree that 143k into your pocket is not bad at all. hardly a failure in the normal sense, i.e. he has made a handsome profit for damn all work. it’s a “failure” in the sense that he is not following up with the implicit promise of tons of publicity. It’s also quite boring and tacky. Especially as the vast VAST majority of sales were built on the promise of how well the last home page fared, and these were made BEFORE it was launched. the first one succeeded as people watched the thing grow. this one got sales by promising the same would happen again and it hasn’t. It can’t, as there is simply no story behind it. That’s the reason the old one got coverage, the “I’m a poor student blogging my way to a million through my clever idea that hits the sweet spot between word of mouth and the internet”. Now it’s “Remember me? Gimme your money! I couldn’t be arsed convincing you, let alone coming up with a good story”. Make no mistake, if the initial sales were based on this concept alone, noone would have bought. and since launching, noone would have bought except for the initial sales making it look like it would be another winner. The new site depends completely on perceptions, not any underlying story that has legs. hence nobody will visit it. And it looks awful.
“Million dollar home page” had a ring to it, and anyone who watched telly would go look it up the next day. What TV newscaster worth their salt would promote this obviously lazy, greedy, unimaginative follow up? there’s no value for the viewer. the initial story made the viewer feel good or inspired hence a newscaster will broadcast it. now, the newscaster would simply be Tew’s thankless pimp. Note : he thought he could do it all without trying, hiring his mum and his opportunistic brother, rather than people who might challenge him and his ideas. Lesson for Mr Tew : find people who will challenge you and are smarter than you, i.e. most people.
Anyhow, I think the kind of people who follow blogs do so for intellectual excitement, none of which pixelotto delivers. I’m sick of the word pixel, it communicates zero value and I think tew is broken record every time he uses it. maybe he’s too busy coming with the e-book on his incredible creative skills, you know, the kind that he demonstrates by driving a pansy mini and being a “college drop out” with a “low attention span” because staying in college might force him to not be the smartest in the room and have to deal with people who think different to him.
Such hubris.
In short, 143k or not, he doesn’t deserve it as he hasn’t delivered on the basic premise of the site. and he got it on teh back of something that is dead and buried. Someone claimed critics should get a book on “Marketing 101″. Perhaps the first lesson in there is “have something that delivers value”. REMEMBER : he sold people the fame of something which is finished, and gullible people bought it.

So how do you define value? Is it something that should be applicable ‘across-the-board’? Or is it something that applies to those who find value to it? You think a pantyliner would be of value to you as it is to a female? Don’t think so.
Products such as those of Alex’s are of value only to those who have something to benefit of it, whether that be monetary or not. It’s really common sense, why would you buy something that has no value to you? And if it doesn’t have value to you, why even exert the time to downplay the effort and call it “failure”? Just because it doesn’t benefit you doesn’t mean it won’t to others. And hey, if you did buy pixel space from him but didn’t benefit from it, unless all of those who bought had the same experience as you, that doesn’t mean it’s a complete failure, isn’t it? More than 80% of computer users still buy MS Windows, and a lot are so pissed with it, but you must be a total idiot not to realize why more people still buy it. Perhaps they’re all idiots and just give away money to Bill Gates’ company if they find no value in his software, eh?

Sure, go convince yourself. As for me, between you and Alex and the people who’ve bought their pixel space and are getting increased traffic/customers from it, I’m pretty sure who’ll be smiling all the way to the bank. :)

People who say that his site is still a success because it brought him a couple of hundred thousand more than he had before, consider this:
Before Pixelotto, Alex Tew was in the position of being headhunted by some big companies. He could have been set with a great job and some REAL “million dollar” prospects. He also had interest in his “new ideas†and had a great platform from which to launch something original and exciting, if he could have produced the goods.
In short, from his MDHP platform he COULD have gone on to some great things, and made TEN TIMES what he made from Pixelotto.
Instead he has ruined his reputation, and lost the interest of the public. So is he really the business genius the press would have had us believe?

value is something that matters to you. The value he sold was ‘I will get loads of people to look at your website’. now maybe some people are clicking on your website but not to look at it. the MDHP was a success because it was such a patchworkof random sites some of which were cute because they were so small and random. And we liked the advertisers for being part of the big story (poor kid pays college fees) so we visited their sites.
none of this applies any more. people click to make the one of ten clicks required to win money and don’t bother reading sites in depth. most of which I’d be ashamed to look at amyway (get girls, win loads, ra ra ra).
so people get spammed by clickers, not checked out. there’s BOUND to be one or two sites that buck this trend, but I will guess that the vast majority follow this trend.
and if so many people are laughing all the way to the bank, WHY HAVE WE NOT HEARD OF THEM!!!!!!!?????? no customer reviuews like in MDHP, no blog, no list no nothing, in short a lzay haphazard site with a fraction of the content of teh original, and the laugh is he hired people to make it as opposed to the shoestring of the original!!! in the original we followed his wacky adventures to Google headquarters etc etc now there is nothing for us to look at and later spend time on his crappy ugly site.
Sigh, LBA, you are filled with hope that somebody somewhere is coming up with something clever, and you wish to be part of that somehow, but it don’t alter reality.
“tax on the stupid”, someone called it.
Bingo.

BTW, have you kids thought about how if this site is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO great, why is A Tew not showing his uglu mug in public? Or disputing a single claim of the site’s failure to customers? he was all over the place before…
yoo hoo mr genius business man there are some people at the door for you, something about promising them something and not delivering…
could it be Mr Tew is actually spending all his time with his lawyers (who can’t come cheap and know a wet behind the ears sucker for their high fees when they see one… unless his mum is representing him in court… I’d pay to see that!!!) Come on Alex, show your mug. get on telly, face the customers, get out there and ACTUALLY JUSTIFY YOUR PRODUCT :)
really, no kidding, any entrepreneur has to justify why their product or service is worth it, and pixelotto is abhorrible mutation, it is so million dollar home page after falling into a vat of toxic waste to emerge, scarred, horrible, missing limbs and half a brain and hell bent on revenge…. sort of like caligula after overloading on general corruption and deciding that instead of fighting to save the empire he’ll get the slaves to entertain him as they chop at each other in the arena… gaaahh… the hubris of it all as another blogger commented….

by the way, on value, LBA, what is value to YOU?
come on, make a compelling case for PL, show us where we are all wrong, be an ambassador for this obvious snake oil huckster. I mean he’s not doing it himself, so you better do it, right?
can’t believe you are not looking at thenumbers. he sold 95% of the site BEFORE it launched by saying “I promise this one will be at least as good”. he deserves to be asked for refunds, he is NOT DOING HIS JOB.
he can’t the product has no value. (definition of value for the pedantic among you = “something that matters to someone”)

ah, the idealism… are you aware of the fact that many rare animals are killed in the belief that their body parts make you more virile (purely from their shape) and these fetch a big price? and we are talking a lot of people believe in this hokum. plenty more analogies out there. Also, get this into your head, he said he’d bring them meaningful traffic and he didn’t. no promotion, nothing. believe me there are plenty people out there who luck out, and once they have wind beneath their sails they ride to the devil (pardon the mixed metaphor ;) )

because it is too much hassle to change as all their content is locked into a windows format. you DO think about these things a LITTLE before saying them, right? ;) and if it’s a hassle for individuals it is for corporations who face massive bills for changing platforms and hiring new sstaff, firing old ones… LBA, perhaps you shoudl do an MBA. Gates is no dummy. and MS Software is not THAT bad, and does what it’s supposed to do generally speaking, with the odd glitch. the upsides of changing (crashes slightly less than a mac) are smaller than the downsides (learn whole new operating system, not be able to use MS Word, buy new PC, forget about all old content… etc)

oh wait, none of that seems to be happening…. funy that, it being so brilliant and all….

stop talking like he set up shop and people came to check out his goods and purchased them on their merits! he got this money BEFORE he did anything. you cannot compare getting an advance with a sale. if a writer gets an advance for a book (perfect analogy) it’s because the publishers saw the previous work done and are saying ’same again please!’. this is also the basis for bonuses in the City (interesting fact for you all).
HOWEVER.
the book is not materialising. the job has not been done. the mini HAS been bought, and a table football table if i am not mistaken and some rent paid on a flat in London, but apart from this purple monstrosity which was done on the utter utter CHEAP, you can’t say ‘he’s worked for one month and earned 3000 a day’.
Remember that Simpsons episode where Homer designed the ultimate car for his brother who trusted him purely because he felt guilty? look it up. people may not have given him a chance for family reasons, but in both cases they threw the guy a bone. the results are approximately similar.

but still
let’s not forget what WENT RIGHT about MDHP
while its mutant offspring will likely disappear off the evolutionary tree, something was right about the original. a story garnered MASSIVE coverage and MONETIZED it
(sort of like Christianity, except no army of evangelists brought it forward through 2000 years, Tew is more like John the Baptist who sort of fizzled out, while the other team’s god did well)
anyway, seriously though, the results were REAL. yes yes, the current thing borrows heavily on the success of the past, and may have to repay it all, but the original idea had legs, and Tew landed on it.
anyhow, note any decent company starts small and through hard work and determination takes off, not through expecting people to support you jsut becuae you’re you (again, religion does, but that’s religion)

Yah the PL website is a disgraceful dud. The MDHP carried a story and the media picked it up and he piggybacked on it and made a few quids. But just remember, EVERY major success in this world has failed miserably more than once in life. This guy struck lucky the first time but we can’t expect him to strike lucky every time. If he had failed 7 times before striking it big, people wouldn’t talk so much about him. Have a look at Edison’s life and see how many of his inventions failed. Bottom line: Snake oil salesman or not- you win some you lose some. Its a numbers game. Just keep at it with persistence.
