  CTRL+SHIFT+ESC works in Windows XP (at least Pro-edition), and is the shortcut of my choice.

  If you even bothered to look at the image on the post, you’ll notice that control alt delete brings up this when you hit it:

  Actually “duh” is right, the last version of windows to bring up Task Manager with CTRL + ALT + DEL was windows Me.

  Windows 2000 or XP will display options to lock, log off, change password etc, with CTRL + ALT + DEL

  I’m using XP Pro right now, and hitting control alt delete brings up task manager. I also own home edition and media center. Both of which bring up task manager when hitting control alt delete.

  Apparently the issue here is weather or not the machine is a member of a domain. Windows XP pro on a domain WILL bring up a list of the same options as vista, where as an XP machine (home or pro not a member of a domain) will bring up task manager.

  Okay, okay. Somebody do some research here.

  There are two ways windows XP can be set up. If you happen to use the welcome screen (You get a menu of logins when you start your computer) then ctrl+alt+del brings up task manager directly. If you don’t use the welcome screen (you get a box asking for username and password) then ctrl+alt+del brings up the menu.

  Go to

  Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the way users log on or off

  You can toggle the welcome screen on or off, and see the difference yourself.

  How on earth are you supposed to do the Control+Shift+Escape thing with one hand? It is an extremely unintuitive thing to do and it hurts my hand every time - every time my computer freezes because of stupid Vista, I think of how stupid Microsoft is in yet another way.

  ctrl+alt+del is always the choice of keys i use to bash in anger when something goes wrong. now they want me to press ctrl+alt+esc??? i just did that in XP pro it did two things, messed up my hand (i need to goto the hospital), and it scrambled my currently open windows. anyways the time it takes you to click the extra stuff with ctrl+alt+del in vista your computer could already froze on you. if i want the task manger, i want it now; so i can attempt to stop the issue quickly before it messes me up. i also don’t wanna break my hand in the process

  oh and by the way “duh”… window 2000 brings up the thing with all those buttons and the option of the the task manager. XP home, XP pro they bring up the task manger directly. The computer i am using right now is XP pro, my moms old laptop (i miss her) is XP home. and I’ve used computers at school with 2000. and I’ve pretty much used the task manger countless times, so i know what I’m talking bout. not to be a “knowitall”

  Look people….read the rest of the posts. If your PC is on a domain…or if you’re welcome screen is turned off….CTRL+ALT+DEL gives you an option list just like Vista.

  I2aMpAnT….I jumped to no more conclusions then the author of this article.

  Anybody who uses XP or 2000 ON A DOMAIN will see this list if they press CTRL+ALT+DEL. ANY windows domain….the way a user changes their password is by hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL and selecting Change Password. Google “Change Domain Password” to see for your self.

  CTRL+SHIFT+ESC is easy to hit with one hand….hit CTRL+SHIFT with your left thumb and ESC with your left middle finger.

  Actually, there are many ways to change the way CTRL-ALT-DELETE interacts with the system.

  First of all: Fast user switching, if enabled will pop you the task manager.

  Second: A windows 2k/Xp computer on a windows domain with no further configuration or policies will pop a “windows Security” window with all of the above options.

  However, if the domain admin wanted so, he can enable group/domain/local policies to force the normal CTRL-ALT-DELETE behaviour.

  That’s it …

  Thanks, Ploplen. I realized that some of the things in my post didn’t quite cover everything (like the domain thing) however, I think I can sum things up nicely. (And hopefully finally.)

  If the computer happens to be on a domain, the welcome screen is usually disabled. Which means, again, that it asks for a username/password.

  *Note the usually. There is apparently a setting that lets ctrl+alt+del bring up task manager while still having the welcome screen disabled. (see infinity’s post)

  Duh’s post tried to sum this up as well, but apparently people don’t listen.

  segamanxero: Your school’s 2000 computers are probably on a domain, while your XP computers in your home are probably not. See earlier in this post for details.

  When i press ctrl alt del I get a menu, not task manager, but a menu with TAsk manager, Lock Computer ,Shut Down,Log Off!!!
  Please help me to make it normal!!

  TIP: i found it’s not that hard to do if you use your left hand and hit both ctrl+shift with your thumb and press esc with your middle finger(cause it’s the longest)…not that bad really.

  ctl+alt+del always brought up task manager in XP for me, as did ctl+shift+esc
  in vista old faithful brings up a dumb screen with alot of dumb options i dont care about. I just use ctr+shift+esc and always wear a brace on my wrists

  hmm, i also am really finding it hard to change from ctrl+alt+del to ctrl+shift+esc, i followed that link there and tried what it said to do in the registry but i don’t have the registry files he says to change…

  after an hour or 2 of more browsing i gave up and decided to change the shortcut myself, but wait, u cant change the shortcut to that file, nor can you use ctrl+alt+del because its already being used!

  the quick fixes to these is to create a shortcut and place that shortcut where ever you wish(mines on my desktop for secondary ease of access) and change the keyboard shortcut of that file shortcut to something similar to ctrl+alt+del, ctrl+alt+end works for me, del and end are right beside each other and using end still makes sense because what do u use the task manager for other than ending programs.

  First hit in google but it wasn’t what I was looking for. But i’ll ask anyway:

  Yes Ctrl+alt+del in Vista is annoying, but does anyone know of a way to utilise this new menu?

  IE, adding your own list items to the ctrl+alt+del menu, and using it as a quick home screen?
