There’s been a lot of buzz on websites like UnlockUnit.com because of a new Google copyright that would serve advertisements based on your environmental conditions. Many people are calling these creepy or an invasion of privacy, but is it really? Google, Facebook, and any other large company that sells advertisements decides which ads to display based on your searches, interests, age, and a variety of other factors. So why not take it a step further with mobile devices and use environmental conditions? I don’t really see the problem.

Many people feel that this patent crosses the line, but I don’t see why. A sensor in your smart phone would be read and analyzed by a computer program to display relevant advertisements. It’s not like someone is analyzing your data by hand or the data is being broadcasted to the world. It’s simply just a little bit of code built into your Android phone to display more relevant ads, nothing more. How does this differ from Facebook displaying ads based on your relationship status or interests?

This technology could be applied to a variety of things including smart phones, billboards, and kiosks. The device could contain a sensor to check the heat, humidity, and if it’s day or night. This data could then be used to display an ad for cold beer on a hot day or a cup of coffee at a local coffee shop if it’s a cold morning. I think technology like this is inevitable and is definitely not a privacy invasion because the data isn’t analyzed by humans.

With smart phones getting smarter each day and technology like Google’s glasses, this technology might very well be a part of our future. However, there’s simply no need to panic. Many companies file patents every day for things they have no immediate plans to use – this is nothing new. Whether this gets built into the latest Android smart phones or is never given another consideration is just speculation at this point. One thing is clear, the overwhelming majority of people are against this decision, which would lead to a rise of jailbreaking phones, go to unlockunit.com for more information.

I’ve blogged about how hard ATT tries to keep you from unlocking your iPhone, but never provided any solutions to unlock your phone. If you have Verizon or Sprint, simply calling them and asking them to unlock your phone might work. With ATT unless you’re out of your contract, there’s no way to do it without 3rd party software. iPhone Factory unlock or Gevey Ultra S are simple, easy, and cheap method of freeing you from your current carrier and allowing you to use your iPhone anywhere.

This is probably the easiest method of unlocking an iPhone I’ve seen. It requires no software – all you need for this to work is their custom SIM card. Just place the SIM card in your phone underneath the one you have in there now. It will search for a carrier and after a few seconds pop up instructions on what to do next.

After you accept the message that pops up, dial 112 on your phone. You’re going to want to hang up before it connects. Next, go into your settings and turn airplane mode on and then off. A message should pop up saying no SIM card found – click OK. Switch it on and off once more and click OK to the error message again. It should search for the signal and then unlock the phone.

I like hardware unlock solutions because they’re not only easier but safer. You don’t risk bricking your phone and you don’t have to void your warranty. Hopefully soon ATT will follow other carrier’s leads and stop selling pre-unlocked phones for more money than locked versions.

This post brought to you by CDW. All opinions are 100% mine.

Any online business should practice good data loss prevention. On average a data leak costs companies an average of 6 million dollars per incident. In all circumstances, it’s cheaper to invest in network security rather than eventually falling victim. So how can you prevent data leakage with your business?

There are four major points that networks should worry about. Mobility devices are one of those and are often overlooked. With smart phones containing more and more personal information, data leakage is on the rise. Sometimes smart phones even have remote access to servers and critical files. Cloud security is another big risk for large companies. The storing of personal files on remote webservers is something usually nobody thinks twice about. However, as we rely more and more on cloud storage, we need to take a step back and think about what we’re uploading. Many companies protect against threats well, but do they have plans in place if it actually occurs? Knowing what to do in case of an attack is essential in case of emergencies. The last critical step in maintaining data security is monitoring it. Knowing who accesses it, copies it, and when it happened is crucial for your data to remain secure.

Encryption is an important method in preventing data leaks. Even if your data is compromised, encryption acts as a final layer of protection between an attacker and sensitive information. Many consumers take for granted that companies are encrypting their personal info such as credit cards, passwords, and other personal details. However, an alarming amount of companies store that type of data in plain text.

With wide spread use of encryption made available on all devices and platforms, I find it amazing everyone is not using it. File encryption, hard drive encryption, or the simple hashing of passwords are an essential means of protecting digital data.

When you hire 4 Fatal Gaps, what should you expect? You should get a comprehensive analysis of your computer systems. This should include possible points of attack and weaknesses. They should suggest ways to close existing holes and to improve the strength of current systems in place. An experienced company might even provide a proof of concept to show you how your system can be exploited.

Software should be implemented to monitor who accesses what data. This will give trails of when data is accessed, copied, or transferred by anyone. It will also making it easier to identify leaks that do happen.

With trade secrets, customer information, and many other confidential files being stored on computer systems, do not find out how important data security is the hard way. Hire a company that will seek out holes, patch them, and make it easier to monitor the flow of data in and out of your network.

I’ve been creating a lot of micro niche sites recently. A micro niche site for me is an 11 page site with 10 articles and an article on the home page. The domain is an exact match for your main keyword. These are high quality articles with 2-5 images per page. The content isn’t spammy, it’s useful and attracts linkbacks from eHow and other websites that use it as guides. I’ve found that using WordPress gets the website indexed and ranked faster than any other blogging platform.

I’ve also found specific domain extensions to matter as well. For instance, websites offering cheap WordPress hosting that put your website on a sub domain do not rank as well as top level domains. Blogger and other free or cheap blogging platforms do not rank too well either.

I’ve found the best top level extension to use is .com followed by .net and .org. I like .com for one reason: it is indexed and listed in the serps much faster. I’ve tried others such as .info and it took me 10 days for the website to be searchable on Google. A .com domain will rank in 3 days or so.

So why is WordPress good for SEO? WordPress allows you to easily create good page titles, meta descriptions, and keywords on the fly. It will also allow you to automatically ping websites each time you create a post. You can use the built in RSS feed as a sitemap and submit that to Google as well as other websites. Additionally, right from the start without any work from you WordPress notifies Google that there’s a new website out there.

So how can you find the best WP hosting? Since WordPress has become so popular these days, many cheap hosts like Hostgator offer one click WordPress setups. They will download and install WordPress automatically for you with no effort. I do not recommend you use a WordPress host that hosts your blog on a sub domain such as WordPress.com. Stick to a host that allows you to use your own TLD.

ATT announced last month that it would be allowing customers an easy solution to unlock iPhone 4s and other versions. However, this isn’t really anything new. Other carriers such as Sprint, Nextel, and even Verizon have been doing this since the iPhone was no longer exclusive to ATT.

Color me cynical but I’m not too impressed with their decision. Granted it’s a step forward, but this should have been policy since they were no longer the exclusive iPhone carrier. It’s a little known fact that if you just simply ask your carrier, there’s a good chance they will unlock your phone without hassling you. Both Verizon, Sprint, and Nextel will unlock your iPhone if you’re a member in good standing. This means that you’ve been a member for at least 60 days and have all your bills paid in full. This allows you to use different carriers while traveling overseas or makes your phone more valuable if you wish to sell it.

ATT will still only unlock your iPhone if you’re out of your contract date. Meaning you’re essentially locked into ATT for two years after purchasing your phone. This I can only assume is driven by greed so more people purchase the more expensive iPhone’s that are already unlocked.

What’s so frustrating about this is that ATT does not lock you in with any other smart phone. Any Android, Windows or Blackberry can be switched from carrier to carrier with no problems. I can’t think of any legitimate reasons to do this with just the iPhone other than pure greed.

Until ATT follows suit with other carriers services like UnlockiPhone5now will continue to be hugely popular amongst consumers.

When I originally started using WordPress in 2006 I used it strictly for blogging. I don’t think the developers at the time realized what the future would hold: a full on CMS. Many people eventually started to see WordPress as a SEO friendly CMS that could be used for much more than blogging.

I started using it as a CMS for multiple websites, making use of its categories, pages, and static post features in ways that were not seen as traditional. By 2008 all the websites I designed had a WP backend and looked nothing like blogs. I began developing plugins with their easy to use functions and digging deeper into the source code.

I began to give a SEO website redesign to all my sites that used strictly static HTML. It made it easier to update all my content as well as make it search engine friendly. I could change themes and mix and match colors to produce higher click through rates with Adsense. WordPress has saved me countless time that would otherwise be spent managing websites.

Instead of buying expensive SEO software, I could take advantage of built in features of WP. If it didn’t exist I could use the extensive plugin database. Adding meta tags to all my posts, giving a proper permalink structure, and interlinking to previous posts are all made easy with WordPress.

I developed many popular plugins to make mine and other people’s lives easier. Comment Karma was my most popular which allowed users to rate comments to weed out bad comments. This allowed for a voting system that was previously only seen on social media websites such as Digg and Reddit.

I haven’t updated my original WordPress plugin Comment Karma in years. For a while it wasn’t working on newer versions of WordPress and was officially discontinued. However, because of the goodness of open source, Wealthy Netizen decided to take up the task of restoring it. It now works on the newest versions of WordPress and has lots of new goodies.

What is it?

Comment Karma is a comment rating system for WordPress. It follows websites like Reddit and lets its users upvote or downvote a comment based on the content. Bad comments can be hidden and good comments can be highlighted to stand out. It also has the ability to detect controversial comments and style them differently as well.

Features

One click install
Change CSS style for good, bad, and controversial comments
Ajax rating system, no page reloads needed
Prevents multiple votes by same user to same comment
Mouseover JavaScript to encourage voting
Option of multiple up and down images
Ability to set only up votes, only down, or both
Now works with WordPress cache plugins
Allows you to change the location of the images – below or above comment

Download

Many people are complaining about the recent Google updates to their search engine algorithm. I can’t help but think that the majority of people complaining are gaming the system and do not deserve high rankings in the first place. Like always, if your site has quality content that’s beneficial to your audience, you probably were not affected. If you’re like me, your websites traffic even improved.

April 19th was when the latest Panda updates took place. Like clockwork, some of my websites traffic improved as much as 33%. That’s a pretty significant amount to improve overnight. Granted there were some legitimate websites that were affected such as Viagra.com, which was taken out of the top 100. However, the overwhelming majority of people affected were spammers and people with low quality made for Adsense websites.

Unlike prior Google updates, Google has given webmasters a form to fill out if you think you were unfairly affected in the updates. You can submit a petition to have your website manually reviewed if you think your website took unnecessary hits with certain keywords.

Many Middle Eastern digital marketing experts have been affected this update. Since these updates focused on proper grammar in particular, this is a group that could have been unfairly affected more than others. The Middle East has an extremely high amount of people creating website content with English as their second or even third language.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 was finally announced today and it’s not too impressive. Hardware changes include a 4.8” screen, Quad Core Exynos 1.4 Ghz processer, 8MP rear camera, and 1.9MP front. There will be three options of internal memory, 13GB, 32GB, and 64Gb and it will be available in two colors: white and blue.

I’m not too impressed with the design of the Galaxy S3 and would argue that the Galaxy S2 looked nicer. Android is trying to move away for the need of physical buttons on the phone such as menu and home. However, the S3 has incorporated them unnecessarily. I’m not a huge fan of the 4.8” screen either, I’d like to have a choice of smaller models.

One thing I like about the phone is the removable battery and I wish more smart phone makers would gravitate towards that option. I’m also happy to see SD card support so you’re not forced to upgrade your phone to 64GB.

Some cool software upgrades include smart stay. This will keep the phone’s screen on and unlocked while you are looking at it. Another cool one is direct call which will call the person you’re currently texting if you put the phone up to your ear.

The Galaxy S3 will run Touchwiz over Android to give what Samsung thinks are improvements to Android. I think that the Touchwiz interface strongly resembles Gingerbread and is overall pretty ugly. In my opinion Ice Cream Sandwich has a very nice and useable interface, however Samsung wants their phones interface to remain consistent throughout releases.

The Galaxy S3 will be released in June to North American, May 29th to Europe and there are currently no plans for an Australian release.

Google is usually known for their high quality web services, but I along with most people am not too impressed with their latest service: Google Drive. My expectations for Drive were to at least match and hopefully exceed services offered by competitors in online file storage, but in my opinion Drive is just your average cloud storage service. There are really no advantages or incentives to using Drive over your current file storage provider and here’s why.

Public sharable URLs

My biggest gripe with Drive is that you can’t direct link to files. Dropbox and many other file storage services allow you to directly share your files through public links. With other sites you can stream music, show images in galleries, and view documents right from your web browser. They even allow the download of executable files. Google only allows you to publicly share images and documents from within your web browser, which isn’t enough for me. At minimum I’d like to see music streaming added to their current features which are image and document sharing/viewing. However, ideally you should be able to create public URLs for all file types.

Space

While 5GB for free is a lot, I expected more from a company who offers over 7GBs of space for email alone. At minimum I expected them to match or exceed their competitors, namely Microsoft. Microsoft’s SkyDrive is dominating in that respect offering up to 25GB. Dropbox isn’t far behind as they offer extra gigabytes for referral fees, so earning 5GB or more is quite easily done.

Mobile device support

Of course Drive is available for Android devices; it would have been unheard of not to. However with Blackberry, Windows, and especially iOS not being supported, I have to wonder what Google was thinking. iOS is a massive part of the smart phone market, and an even bigger part of the tablet market. How can Google not have at least made their service compatible with the iPhone and iPad?

Offline and online document editing

Currently you can’t upload a Microsoft Word document and edit it with Drive. You’ll have to first convert it to Google Document format before editing. While the conversions keep getting better and better and are acceptable for basic Word documents, there’s always room for improvement.

Offline editing is another big feature absent from Drive. You can currently view all your documents while offline using Google’s software. However, if you wish to edit them you will be required to use Microsoft Office or some equivalent software.

The last desktop computer I purchased, I built myself. I ordered all the parts individually from Newegg and Tigerdirect. It’s not as hard as you might think and with a little research and handyman skills, it’s easily done. The biggest reason I built my own rig is because of price. However, there are other incentives such as choosing your own case and deciding what areas of your computer will be its strong suite. You can customize it so it’s a powerhouse or better for gaming. Either way, for these reasons, next time I buy a PC I will definitely build it again.

A fast computer specifically boot time was what I was looking for in a computer. For this reason I opted to go with a solid state drive. Solid state drives are much faster than their typical hard drive cousins. They have no moving parts so they can read and write data twice as fast as the fastest hard drive. Combined with the extremely fast boot times in Windows 8, my computer now boots in under five seconds. That’s highly impressive, my last computer took 30 seconds or so to boot and my first computer took minutes!

My next primary concern was the processor. I’ve always been a huge Intel fan over AMD. It seems that they’re more power efficient, run at lower temperatures, and are usually always one step ahead of AMD. I went with the Core i3 series processors since i7 and i5 were a little passed my budget. Core i3 is plenty fast for what I need a computer to do. It’s dual core with hyper speed which emulates four cores.

Memory was the last important factor in the speed of my computer. I wasn’t aware of how much memory actually costs, so I couldn’t get the absolute best quality. I ended up getting 4Gb of a moderately fast speed.

I wasn’t too picky for either the motherboard or the video card. I needed a mobo that supported SSD and the latest PCI-E versions, those were my only concerns. For video card I wanted one that supported HDMI and DVI, so again I wasn’t too picky. I don’t game so a killer video card was not something I was concerned about.

After I picked out all my items, I used some coupons from NewEgg.com which saved me a lot on such a big order. I also took advantage of their free shipping offers because my order was so expensive. After all was said and done I had a pretty fast computer for much less than it would cost to purchase in a store.

An increasing number of people are downloading either fake or malicious applications from the Android market. Malicious applications posing as legitimate apps or just plain fake and harmful apps are making their ways through Google Play more and more every day.

Take NumberGuru, a popular application with over 1,200 installs and a 3 ½ star overall rating. It’s a simple application which promises free reverse phone look up and caller ID services. In theory it’s a simple idea, it needs permission to analyze your incoming calls and compare them with their database. This “simple” application requires over 15 potentially harmful permissions that could take over your entire phone.

Among the harmful permissions are kill background processes, retrieve running apps, modify SD card, intercept outgoing calls, read/write contact data, directly call numbers, and full internet access. To make matters worse this application will start every time your phone boots up. Installing such an application could prove devastating to your phone and privacy if the developer has malicious intent.

A reverse phone lookup service is simple and should not request hardly any of those permissions. An application should only have to compare an incoming phone number to an existing telephone number database.

The only reason I think NumberGuru might indeed be a legitimate service is because they have an iPhone application and a website as well. Apple, for better or for worse manually approves each application that passes through their market. This takes the risk out of downloading applications on your mobile devices. Microsoft is soon to follow in this trend with the release of Windows 8.

However, there’s good and bad about a manual approval processes. Apple is famous for being extremely picky and restrictive when it comes to approving applications for iOS. Tethering, VLC, and many other potentially popular applications are being denied because Apple doesn’t agree with what they do.

Looking closer at NumberGuru some of these permissions can be explained. For instance, the writing to contacts is easily explained because this service creates a contact list separate from your main list that stores phone numbers from known spammers. The full internet access is most likely used to download the customer reviews of each phone number. Users can rate each phone number that is looked up through the service and tell you if they’re a spammer or not. However, giving any application permission to make outgoing calls without you knowing is pretty concerning to say the least.

I may be singling out NumberGuru here, but I am using them as an example. Their phone look up service may very well, and most likely is legit. However, there is a huge potential of abuse for the permissions this app and many other Android applications ask for.

So be careful when accepting the permissions applications are requesting. Read carefully what each permission does and ask yourself if it’s necessary. Make sure applications you’re downloading are official and not knock offs. Always read the reviews and check the ratings of any application you download.

Following previous releases, Call of Duty Black Ops 2 will be released November 13 according to a recent slip by retailer Target. Thanks to the new Target pre-order gift cards, which confirmed what many have suspected – a November release date. This comes as no surprise as almost all games in the Call of Duty series have a pre-Christmas release date.

You can pre-order Black Ops 2 in all stores starting May 2nd. The release and pre-order date will be officially announced during the NBA play offs on May 1st. If Black Ops 2 is anything like the Modern Warfare release with over 800 million copies sold in the first five days, you’ll definitely want to order ahead of time.

While the Black Ops series isn’t made by the same developer as the Modern Warfare series, it uses the same basic principles. There will be many new features in black ops including game play modes. Escort, Split Spawn, and Equalizer are all new game modes that will be introduced. With the added game modes come some minor tweaks as well. People who use rifles will now have an easier time aiming. However, many users feel that many rifles, especially three shot burst guns have a huge advantage over any other gun specifically sniper rifles. It will be interesting to if Black Ops 2 attempts to provide a more even playing field. There are also improvements in the graphics department with more realistic looking weapons.

Black Ops 2, like the first version will be futuristic and modern in game play. It will use many of the current guns our soldiers are using in Iraq.

Call of Duty is the most purchased and widely played game series of all time. Black Ops 2 will be the ninth in this epic series of video games released by Activision and like its predecessors will available on Xbox and PS3 game consoles.

A Virtual Private Network, or VPN, is an essential tool that secures Internet users from online threats while accessing the Internet. A VPN forms a secure network by using an encrypted tunnel to the Internet. All of the user’s information passing through this tunnel is encrypted so that no one can access the user’s vital information.

How does a VPN work?

When users purchase a VPN, they are given new, server-generated IP addresses. These IP addresses mask their original IP addresses from third parties. A VPN provides worldwide server locations that allow users to bypass geographical restrictions imposed by the local firewalls of different countries.

Selecting a VPN provider for your iPhone

An Android or iPhone VPN is an essential tool for browsing the Internet without restrictions, and for securing essential data and information. There are many VPN service providers that come up with tempting offers. When a user selects a VPN provider, They must know that the VPN provider offers the best service and meets all of their requirements. Only a VPN provider that uses the latest technology can give users unlimited, uninterrupted access to the Internet. Before purchasing a VPN, a user should make a list of their requirements.

Factors to Consider when Selecting the Right Android / iPhone VPN Provider

There are numerous factors that users should consider before they decide to purchase an iPhone VPN:

Online security is one major reason that online users buy iPhone VPN connections. Users today depend on the Internet tremendously, whether for banking transactions or for education. As a result, they must protect their online data from the hands of the hackers. The right VPN provider offers this security by connecting users to a server located in another country.

When users purchase a VPN for full online freedom and security, they must ensure that the VPN provider offers new IP addresses for their desired countries. For instance, users located outside of the United States might want to access American websites that are blocked in their current location. The right VPN provider should offer users access to these American websites from other countries.

When buying a VPN, always ensure that the services offered by the provider are compatible with operating systems like Linux, Windows, and Mac. In addition, VPN connections should work smoothly on tablets, smart phones, and computers. Users may want to use their VPN connection with a mobile device.

Buy a VPN from a service provider that does not depend on third parties for outsourcing.

A user should buy a VPN only when they are assured of quick speeds and uninterrupted browsing from any corner of the world.

When purchasing a VPN from a VPN provider, ensure that they maintain many IP addresses at different server locations, and that users can browse from any location without extra cost.

Users should consider the above factors when they buy an Android or iPhone VPN. There is no use in paying large bills to a VPN provider that cannot meet demands. Purchase a VPN that allows safe access the Internet without interruptions.

I’ve used all hosting types from dedicated to VPS to shared. I’ve found each to have their own individual strengths and weaknesses and have finally settled on shared hosting. Aside from people who need high customization or own extremely high traffic websites, shared hosting works fine. There are many companies who make big claims offering unlimited hosting. This means unlimited bandwidth, file space, and domains. However, with these wild claims, can they provide a worthwhile service?

The answer is shockingly yes from my experience. I’m writing this article without any affiliate tags, these are my personal experiences. I’ve used two web hosts that offer basically unlimited everything for around $10 per month: Hostmonster and Hostgator. While you may think that these claims are impossible and the quality must lack because of their prices, you’re wrong.

I used each service for well over two years and I’ve literally had no problems with them. There’s no downtime due to server problems or DDoS which I hear is common on shared hosting. For companies offering “unlimited” (20 gigs) file space and unlimited bandwidth, the quality of their services is surprisingly good.

I only use tech support maybe once a year at best, but when I do I find them to be helpful and prompt. You only have to wait about five minutes to get to a technician and when you do they’re knowledgeable enough to assist you in most cases.

I think these companies rely on the fact that most people who sign up for their plans do not use a lot of bandwidth or disk space. If everyone used their servers like I did, I’m sure there would be quality issues. I’ve noticed that since I’ve signed up Hostgator has limited my disk space to a modest 20,000MB and my total file amounts to 100,000. Not bad for $10 a month. However, I’ve both exceeded amount of files and disk space and there was no repercussions or warnings on my account. In short, it truly is unlimited.

It seems that if you stick with rather well-known companies such as 1&1 (which I’ve had experience with) and the other companies I mentioned above, your hosting experience will be rather pleasant. I’ve used many little known companies such as Hivelocity and had nothing but problems. From downtime to lack of tech support, little known companies aren’t the way to go – stick with big names.
