This is a free Wordpress theme that was coded for the latest version of Wordpress. The background is black, the post area is white, and there are blue images. The heading is text so you can easily swap what you want it to say. Included is the full PSD to change anything you want on it. I ask that you keep all sponsor links, as they are the only things keeping these themes free. This theme isn't widget ready, however, most future ones will be hopefully. It's a standard two column theme, and the side bar is on the left. Enjoy it, and all future releases :) This theme was sponsored by enQuira, and Myspace Layouts

If you're interested in the theme, you can download it here. There is also a demo installation on that link as well.

Wordpress Plugin To Reduce 70% Of Spam

If you've ever owned a Wordpress blog, you know that the amount of spam comments is ridiculous. I get a couple thousand spam comments per week, and checking through Akismet to find false positives would be nearly impossible. Shifting through comments, there is a clear pattern of spam. A lot of them use bbcode for forums (currently not supported by wordpress). Others simply put a hundred blogspot links in the comment area. This plugin simply blocks obvious spam comments using the following criteria:

  • Matching the bbcode pattern [url=http://domain.com]domain[/url]
  • More than 5 links in one comment (can be adjusted based on personal preference).
  • Contains certain words associated with spam such as Viagra (can remove and add words).

If by chance there is a false positive, the user is greeted with an error message telling them exactly what's wrong, and what needs to be removed from the comment in order for it to be posted. Combined with Akismet, this is a powerful way to fight spam. This method blocks about 70% of the spam I receive daily. Using Trackback Validator cuts down on an additional 10-15% of spam. That plugin makes sure the people giving you track backs are actually linking to you before the track back goes in to the queue.

The spam filter plugin has a few cool features in the admin panel which helps control spam even more. It lists all the spam by words, and allows you to delete spam based on certain words. An example would be:

asphost4free (1) (delete spams with this word)

Asphost4free happens to be the iresonsible web host that's allowing the spammers to host their trash. Clicking that link in the admin panel would allow me to delete all spam comments that have the word asphost4free inside of them. This also gives you a good list of keywords that you might want to consider blocking in the future.

The only thing I can suggest for this plugin is a better admin panel. Currently to adjust the link counts than can be in a post and the black listed words, you need to edit the PHP file manually. While not difficult, it's definitely harder than simply clicking a few buttons in the admin panel :).

Digg’s Censoring Continues

May 9th, 2007 - By: Alex Bailey

If by some odd chance you missed the Digg revolt news on your RSS reader, the basic summary can be found at TechCrunch. The basic story is that Digg surrounded to a mob after it spammed the HD DVD processing key on all stories. They did this in order to protest Digg's decision to censor the key and ban users who have posted it.

However, despite Kevin's claims that the censorship is over, I have a very good hunch that he is lying. First of all some background information. Back in March, a bunch of users were causing a stir over "Digg bury brigades", and how a handful of domains (including mine) were innocently being banned. In a blog post, Kevin wrote:

We have tweaked some systems so that Digg is now able to be much more granular in the way it blocks offending content, so that Digg doesn't necessarily need to block entire domains or subdomains. Apologies to any sites we've inconvenienced with our previous system.

Essentially what Digg did was unban a good portion of the offending domains (again, including mine). By his second sentence it appears they've tweaked the algorithm to make it more efficient in finding people that are gaming Digg. In essence he's saying the algorithm has improved and he doesn't need to block domains anymore.

Now for my theory. I believe they've simply tweaked the algorithm to automatically bury a story submitted by the previously banned domain after a random period of time. If you submit a story with the techreads.com domain, it will be buried. There is no question about that. However, what's odd is that if it gets 220 Diggs in a few hours, it'll be buried. If it gets absolutely no Diggs, and draws absolutely no attention and maintains a low profile; it will still be buried. How can it be that a story that has no activity on it, with no Diggs is getting buried?

Before a week ago, this was just a hunch of mine. However, during the HD-DVD riot everything having to do with the key was put on front page by users; except for my story, thus confirming it for me. I submitted an image to Digg, which managed to get over 220 Diggs in a a little over an hour. All other stories in the upcoming queue had less than my story except for one. All of a sudden all of the stories in upcoming disappeared and went on the home page. All of them except mine. Doing a quick search, I found it it was...you guessed it...buried. What are the odds of a story that gained 230 Diggs in a little over an hour getting buried? I believe that's slim to none, considering the content of the front page at that time. During that night there was a gay porn site (link to Digg article) on front page, massive blog spam, and even a parked domain page. However, my story that was a direct image with absolutely no ads disappears? Heh very unlikely.

Doing some investigating you can see that absolutely all of my submissions after the date the ban was "removed" have been buried. It doesn't matter of the story had 4, 7, or 220 Diggs, all of them are mysteriously vanishing.

Firefox Extension: Tab Preview

Tab Scope is a Firefox extension that allows you to preview a tab by simply mousing over the tab. Along with the preview it also acts as a fully functional browser inside of the preview window. You can navigate to new parts of the website, zoom in, scroll, and it also has full support for forward and back. Options for this extension are minimal as there isn't much needed to configure. If wanted you can chose how big the display window is when zoomed in, and when it's zoomed out. You can also decide how long you have to hover over the tab before it pops up.

Firefox Tab Preview

Admittedly I don't keep many of the extensions I review, but this will be one of the dozen or so I will keep. It should work on all Firefox versions; even Firefox 3.0 (1.5 "“ 3.0a5).

Found this extension through LifeHacker.

Can hex be copyrighted? This is the HD-DVD processing key for a large majority of the movies produced thus far. With software, you can watch the DVDs on linux; successfully decrypted.

"The AACS is investigating the claims right regarding of the hack," said AACS spokesporson Jacqueline Price. "It is going to take a appropriate action if it can be verified."

More information about this can be found at this blog, as well as this Digg post.

Here is some more information on the topic. It's a well written Wired article that explains this current hack, along with previous ones.

Anyways spread the word :)
